Newton Cottage Demolition Approved

By Lee Melsek

The town's Local Planning Agency (LPA) approved a request from the town council Tuesday to demolish the Newton Cottage at Newton Park.
The cottage was declared historic about 10 years ago after an error by the county regarding its background. When the error was discovered the town, the state and the park's advisory committee, CELLCAB, all agreed to remove its historic designation. But the LPA earlier this year refused to let the town tear it down. It wanted the town to find the structure another location or see if anyone was interested in taking it. The panel at that time refused to remove it's historic designation, a move that angered some town council members. But the LPA reconsidered that earlier ruling after it learned there were no takers for the building and nowhere to move it. The LPA voted unanimously to let the town tear it down.
No word yet on when the demolition will take place. Town officials will ask the fire department if they would like to use it for a practice burn.
